The eSFL begins it's 12th season with the past two NFL champions kicking off Thursday night. I was thinking back to the first season in the eSFL and can remember the excitement level not being very high at that time. Sure, we had a couple owners fired up and ready to go but the overall attitude was one of less than exciting. Maybe it was just me, as I had unsuccessfully tryed to start a fantasy league two years earlier at the Misawa egress shop. We had six teams and five of the owners didn't even know they had a team. The Kennedy Claymores went on to beat the Rhodes Sea Monkeys in the title game that year, a less than memorable event to say the least. Nerveless, the eSFL was reborn in 2000 at the Minot Egress Shop, and was hosted by YAHOO!. Of course, that first season owners didn't draft their teams, YAHOO! did it for us, essentially taking 70 percent of the fun away from fantasy football. But something magical happened after the draft. Owners all became interested in who was on their team, who wasn't on their team, and who they would have in their starting lineups for the first eSFL week in history. At the time I and most all owners were stuck to watching only a couple games each week, handcuffed by the local broadcast of the games. I believe the Meneely Reapers and Gaus 69ers were the only two owners with total NFL access, Meneely at the local pub and Gaus with SUNDAY TICKET in his living room. The first season ended in storybook fashion on Monday Night Football with the Rams vs Buccaneers being one of the greatest MNF games in my memory. The Ballistic Bowl, so named because Mike Gaus stated, "I will go ballistic on your ass if I don't win the championship" as he and "Dawg" Meneely discussed their chances of winning the whole thing after the draft was concluded. Looking back, without that Monday night miracle, I don't even know if we would have had a second season or not. But we did, and now we are in our 12th.
The excitement level for the eSFL, season 12, is in my opinion at an all time high. Each year since the first one, the league has made enhancements that raised the excitement levels. This season I believe eSFL Radio has taken us into another dimension. Although eSFL Radio began last season I believe it didn't take hold until around playoff time. We now have almost every owner listening to the show either live or pod casting it, as well as past owners calling in on occasion. With eSFL Radio we are able to let everyone know what we think of their team, general managership, their starting lineups, and even propose trades. Additionally, the eSFL Insider has taken a step up in it's popularity and added to the league in a great way. Originally started as a spoof back in 2001, it has turned into a real fantasy magazine, if there is such a thing. The addition of an official eSFL correspondent was a no brainer, and Josh Perdew stood up and accepted the job. His job was simple at first, write the weekly Insider story when assigned owners could not. However, it was immediately recognized his stories were something that we needed more of, and now he has free reign on when and what to write. I also believe Facebook has done us good. I didn't think Facebook was something the league could use, but as it turns out it was. It is a great way for the commissioner to let owners know whats happening in the league, post easy links to eSFL Radio podcast, and much more.
The Whitmore White Workhorse ended last season winning Ballistic Bowl XI over the Pardue Bruisermakers and sending the upstart Appalachian division into acceptance as a contender. This season the draft started of flawed and the two-a-day training camps had some problems, but we made it through and are only 3 plus days away from another eSFL season. On recent eSFL Radio broadcast several statements have been made the the Workhorse team didn't deserve to win last season, and actually the last 4 teams didn't deserve to win. Well, poohey! The best team won and the best team will win this season as well.
This year the Appalachian division looks to be stronger than the Global based on pre-season ratings from owners. However, the Global has several players that are big sleepers and if they strike the division could be at the top of it's usually great form.
