Week 5 eSFL Insider

After an exciting week of double headers in the eSFL, this week’s headlines include some monster trades. I will break down the trades, last weeks games, and give a preview this week’s games along with projections.

A move that made league history:

During the eSFL Postgame radio show on blogtalk radio last week, Jesse Zima, manager of the Ruskies, called in for the first time and made history. The Perdew Pulverizers general manager informed Zima that they were interested in Dallas Clark or Antonio Gates. Perdew stated that he would ship Eddie Royal and Zima countered with Royal and Chris Cooley. Perdew accepted the trade, and Commissioner Rhodes made the deal official. This was the first ever trade over the eSFL radio and many listeners got to hear how this stuff really works. I spoke with the commissioner later on in the week and he stated that both teams seem to be happy with the trade.

On Monday, the final game of the week showed that no lead is safe and many teams came storming back on their opponents. The Kavanators took brutal losses in both games with a whopping 155 points to the hands of two of the best ball clubs to ever play in the eSFL in Temps Texas Boys and Fields Fanatix. Frost came back and beat D Crownholders by 1.3 points in one of the closest games in history. Zima dropped a heartbreaker to Pardue with a 3.46 loss but Pardue split for the week with a pounding that McKinney gave him. Viall nearly squeaked out his first win of the season, but lost to Perdew by 6.9 points and G Man almost won his first game, but fell short by .3 points (the second closest game in league history).

A breakdown of the double header week:

McKinney showed that he is a contender this season during the doubleheader week with two solid victories over Pardue and Boot Hill Balut. The rednecks were lead by Arian Foster with 36 and Charles Woodson with 33 on defense.

Temp Texas Boys had one close game with Kav and a blowout win vs Viall. Two victories this week and Temp showed off the Peyton duo with Manning racking up 31 and Hillis running for 22.

Pardue Bruisermakers dropped a big division game vs McKinney but squeaked by Zima for a split. He was lead by Frank Gore with 22 and Hakeem Nicks 19 points.

Frost Flurries, 1-1 split, won really tight game vs D Crown and took a beating by Zima. Frost was lead by Carson Palmer’s 25 points and Austin Collie with 14.

Zima Ruskies, with the 1-1 split, found out the hard way that no lead is safe, and lost a heartbreaker to Pardue but a victory over Frost was some good news. Zima was lead by Drew Brees with 23 points and Darren McFadden’s 20 points.

Boot Hill Balut, also went 1-1, found himself in a big hole vs McKinney and threw the dirty from that hole on D Crown. The Boot Hill gang got solid games from both big play receivers Calvin Johnson (26 points) and Reggie Wayne (31 points).

D Crownholders, the only 0-2 team in the Global Division this week, dropped games to Boot Hill and Frost. The Frost game was very close but his WR’s are what beat the Crownholders this week. Two wideouts laid goose eggs for D Crown. He was lead by LaDainian Tomlinson with 34 points and Mark Sanchez with 23.

Fields Fanatix, 2-0 this week, dropped a 183 point bomb and sent Kav and Whit to bed early. Fields had monster games from Terrell Owens with 38 and Maurice Jones-Drew had 29.

Perdew Pulverizers, 2-0 this week, won a blowout and a squeaker. He got just enough from his WR’s to lay down Viall late Monday night and knocked the Bruisers around with Lesean McCoy dropping 28 points and Phillip Rivers thowing for 26.

Whitmore Workhorses, 1-1 this week, dropped G Man like a bad habit and got smacked around by Fields. Whit had solid games from D. Bess with 24 points and Joe Flacco with 18.

Texan Bruisers, 1-1 this week, won with a pathetic 86.4 points. He knocked off Viall but took a thumpin’ from Perdew. The Bruisers were lead by Rashard Mendenhall with 27 and Brandon Pettigrew with 17.

Kav Kavanators, 0-2 this week, dropped a big 155 point bomb, and nearly had a heart attack. Temp had to sweat it out on Monday night as Patrick Chung went off for 20.5 points. Fields had a comfortable lead all weekend and cruised to the victory. Kav had a solid performance from newly acquired James Anderson (30 points) and the rest of his defense was stout. I would like to see the records for highest defensive score in a game. I believe Kav may have taken the top spot in that category with 78.5 points this week.

Viall Vigilantes, 0-2 this week, almost took home their first victory of the season in close game vs Perdew but eventually fell short by less than 7 points. They didn’t have a chance against Temp. Viall was lead by Brandon Lloyd with 22 points and Ricky Williams contributed 20 in a losing effort on Monday night.

G Man, 0-2 this week as well, and winless in his eSFL career, nearly took home his first win of the season as well. He dropped a heartbreaker to the Texan Bruisers by less than a half of a point, and got slapped around vs Whitmore. G Man was lead by Lawrence Timmons with 14 points and Nate Kaeding kicked 13 points in the losing effort.

Big trade with big names involved:
Later in the week, one of the biggest trades of the season so far took place between two division rivals. Kavs Kavanators and G Man hooked up a big trade that involved five players. Lets breakdown this trade:

Kav sent Ronnie Brown, Mike Wallace, and Dwayne Bowe to G Man for Chris Johnson and Kevin Walter.

I understand that G Man is trying to upgrade his WR corp and roll with the young RB’s he has, and also sell high on Chris Johnson who has been fairly good this season but not spectacular.
Kav, whom could be a serious contender in the Appalachian division despite his slow start, could potentially have the best 1-2 running back punch in the history of the league. Ray Rice and Chris Johnson are both studs and without any injuries, they could lead this Kavanator team to the playoffs and beyond.
I feel like G Man might be going backward rather than forward and his losing streak could continue unless his newly acquired players perform to expectations. Mike Wallace will reunite with Big Ben after the bye week and has big potential. Dwayne Bowe is adjusting to QB Matt Cassell and Ronnie Brown is the wildcat formation’s wildcat. He has been the most successful wildcat runner or passer to date. But its points scored that matters and I think Kav might benefit more in this trade. We will see in the upcoming weeks.

Week 5 Preview

Each and every week is a battle in the eSFL. This week’s action has some highs and lows. Let’s take a look at the matchups and project the winners.

Battle 1: Texan Bruisers vs Perdew Pulverizers. A repeat of one of last week’s games, Perdew comes into this game with a newly acquired TE in Dallas Clark. The Bruisers expect a better showing this week and put up more than 86 points. Perdew 153-Bruisers 137

Battle 2: Frost Flurries vs Fields Fanatix. Fields is like butter, he’s on a roll! Frost is looking to knock off the cream of the crop in this week’s non division matchup and extend the Global win streak to 6 in a row vs the Appalachian Division. Frost pulls the upset of the week. Frost 135 - Fields 115

Battle 3: Viall Vigilantes vs Gman. Garbage! Both of these 0-5 teams are searching for their first victory of the season. Vaill has been close and so has Gman. These two teams are possibly the worst two teams in the league EVER. Gman 81 Viall-76

Battle 4: Kav Kavanators vs Whitmore Workhorse. Kav explodes against the overrated Whitmore team this week and drops a 180 point bomb. The running game for Kav is just too much for Whitmore to handle. Kav 181-Whit 134

Battle 5: D Crownholders vs McKinney Rednecks. McKinney comes in with an explosive squad that nobody really gave a chance. He now sits atop the powerful Global Division at 4-1 but D Crownholders will get the upset victory this week. D Crown 156 – Rednecks 152

Battle 6: Zima Ruskies vs Temps Texas Boys. Temps Texas Boys are looking to capture their 3rd title in 6 seasons and have the fire power to possibly pull it off. Zima has a solid team that many overlooked early in the season, but starting options have killed the Ruskies. Zima will play the right players this week, and force Temp to change his gameplan. Battle 7: Pardue Bruisermakers vs Boot Hill Balut. Stud vs Dud? Does anyone think that Rhodes has the squad to knock Pardue down again this week? McKinney showed us how to do it. Boot Hill certainly has the players to accomplish this feat. Boot Hill wins a shootout. Boot Hill 168 – Pardue 160.

G Man Ships Johnson

Team G Man has traded the 2010 second overall draft pick, RB Chris Johnson and WR Kevin Walter to the Kav's Kavanator for WR's Mike Wallace, Dwayne Bowe, and RB Ronnie Brown.

Sources report the trade was approved by both owners several days ago but has been awaiting league approval. Owners of both teams were notified that the trade was being reviewed to ensure total fairness and sportsmanship throughout the league.

With an 0-5 start G Man general manager Garrett Bauer decided it was time to push the panic button and get some help at the wideout position. His move means his team will rely on two unproven rookies at the running back position. With the nice start of rookie J. Best and the possibilities of Ryan Mathews, Bauer deemed star Chris Johnson expendable. Another motivating factor in the trade was the fact he had two starters on his team from the same Houston outfit, Walter and Jacoby Jones, with upcoming bye weeks. He received two starting wideouts with hopes that Mike Wallace will expand his output with the return of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Ronnie Brown is viewed as an emergency fill in at the position.
With the addition of Johnson, the Kav team has the 9th and 23rd ranked scoring backs in the eSFL. Although Johnson's output has not been up to its usual standards, his possibilites are high and he is expected to be a top 3 scoring back when the season is complete. Wideout Walter is currently ranked 7th in eSFL scoring at his position with 62.2 points. However, 31 of those came in week two when he had 11 catches for 144 yards.

League Adjust Blocked Kick Rules for 2011

After this weeks games many owners were wondering why players do no get points for blocked kicks any longer. Before we get into details, lets talk a little history on the subject.
The 2008 season the league announced no points would be awarded for blocked kicks. The reasoning is that the official website of the league insist they NEVER kept that stat EVER. I called bullshit to them and showed them the scores from the years that those stats were kept. They still insist it wasn't even after looking right at it. Their thing is that they do not get that stat provided to them except for TEAM Defenses. When the eSFL was giving points for this stat, it was often turmoil because the NFL would change who was given credit for a blocked kick as late as Thursday after the games were done.
With that said, the eSFL has announced the following rule change effective immediately:

In 2011 the commissioner WILL award points for blocked kicks IF :

1. the opposing team owner for that weeks games agrees that a player(s) blocked a kick(s) and authorizes the league to add said points to the final score of the contest. The team owner of the player who blocked the kick must initiate the action by requesting to the opponent that such points be awarded to his team for the blocked kick(s). This request and final authorization from the opposing owner must be submitted to the league (commissioner) no later than Wednesday 6 pm ET of the following week. After that point, there will be no change in scores and they will be official concerning this subject. The commissioner will make point adjustments ONLY if the adjustment will change the outcome of the contest (win or loss). It IS NOT mandatory for any owner to allow the blocked kick points to be added, therefore he may deny the request from his opponent if he wishes. If an owner cannot be contacted on the subject, the league presidents and commissioner will make the decision for that owner if requested by the owner of the player with the blocked kick. This action will be in effect in 2011, meaning this weeks games (4) are not eligible. Blocked kicks, punts, XP, FG will be Worth 10 points for the player. If the NFL gives half credits, such will be the case.

Looking forward, owners and the league have several options for future seasons. They include:

A. Using a different official site that scores blocked kicks. However, owners must remember that the same problems will occur as did in the past. The NFL often changes this stat throughout the week.

B. Keeping the opposing rule as defined above. Meaning the winning team owner may be asked by the losing team owner to allow points to be added for blocked kicks. The commissioner will make point changes to reflect the game outcome.

C. Eliminate the rule discussed in B, allow no points for blocked kicks.

CLARK SENT TO PERDEW, 2010

The Zima Ruskies have sent tight end Dallas Clark to the Perdew Pulverizers in exchange for wide receiver Eddie Royal and tight end Chris Cooley, Zima threw in wideout Blair White to complete the transaction.

In Royal, Zima acquires the eighth ranked wide receiver in scoring (66) and sends the third ranked tight end (73) to Perdew. "What I have done is draft an overage at the tight end position so I could, at my time of choice, move that overage for a position of need, with a known commodity at the time of the move", Zima said. With tight end A. Gates on his squad Zima considered Clark to be expendable. In other words, Zima traded a backup and received a starter. "It's a wash, both teams needed what we got, I needed a tight end and he needed a wide receiver, see him in the post season", General Manager of the Pulverizers, Josh Perdew said.

Week 4 Insider, Part II

Week four of the 2010 season is a doubleheader week, meaning one could easily go from 0-3 to 2-3, or 3-0 to 3-2 in a flash. Several teams have surprised and dissapointed this season, which is guranteed to happen every season. However, with a lot of football left there is plenty of time for teams to turn their seasons around. If there ever was the perfect time for that it would be this week, week four, doubleheader week in the eSFL.
The G Man club has gotten off to an 0-3 start after many had him picked to win the Appalachian Division and be a contender for the Ballistic Bowl title. On the other end of the spectrum is the McKinney Rednecks, whom most critics had ridiculed as "behind the times" and "playing in the year 2002". His team has jumped out to a 2-1 record by posting the fourth most points in the league. I would like to review one set of games in week four and express my opinon about the possible outcome. First, I would like to point that this years schedule was created before teams drafted and was mostly a random event. So, if you feel like you got a tough deal, sorry. Finally, I would like to remind everyone that every game has an impact on the outcome of the league. If after this week your team is 1-4 or 0-5 and you feel as though your chance is done, remember, your best effort is expected from all owners. The Gunner Cup is out there and all teams in good standing are invited to join it at seasons end. With that said, just because you start 1-4 or 0-5 does not mean you cannot still win the Ballistic Bowl. Last years winner finished with a 6-8 record!

GUTTER BOWL OF THE WEEK

PERDEW (1-2) vs VIALL (0-3)

The Viall team looks for their first win of the season against a dissapointed Pulverizers team that lost another close one last week. Viall would have won their first game last week if they had not released quarterback C. Henne and started Vince Young in his place. This is exactly the type of poor fortune that has plagued the Vigilante organization all season dating back to draft day. Honestly, does anyone actually believe this team of rag tag free agents and has beens can win a game this year, much less this one? Yes and No. This week, not a chance, but noone has ever gone winless in the eSFL and I do not expect it to happen this season. 
This weeks contest will be a lopsided affair with the Pulverizers having three players post 20 plus points each to the Vigilante having zero. Rivers, Marshall, and McCoy should total 74 points while the entire Viall club will be hard pressed to reach 90. As a matter of opinion, the Viall team will only have two players with double digit points in this one, Moss (17) and Young (15). Final score: Perdew 160  Viall 90




PREMIER MATCHUP OF THE WEEK

TEMP (2-1) vs KAV (2-1)

This will be a fine matchup with the powerfull Global division trying to continue their dominence of the weak Appalachian Division.

The Texas Boys bost a feared passing attack with quarterback Peyton Manning and wideout Anquan Boldin. With this combination the Temp team ranks second in the eSFL in total points and power ranking with a stout 36. The Kav team ranks 5th and 6th in those categroies, a nice feat considering there is only one other Appalachian team ahead of him.

This weeks game will be a real down to the wire time to talk shit when it is done type of contest. Manning will likely lead all scorers with 35 plus while Kavanators quarterback Jay Cutler should be right behind him in the mid 20's.  The difference in this one, as I see it, will be the surprising Kavanator wide receiver Mark Clayton, who will put up a solid 20 points, and the other nice compliment of D. Jackson who will add 15 himself. The Texan Boy's will find it impossible to overcome the wideout play of his opponent, and Boldin will not be able to keep up as he will post under 10 this week. Final Score: Kav 137  Temp 133

Other contest:

Whitmore vs Fields

Fields pulled a rabbit out of his pocket last week, winning with a pathetic 127 points. Whitmore has jumped to a nice and surprising 2-1 start with a hold on for dear life win against Perdew last week.

Outcome: Fields 140  Whitmore 127 

G Man vs Texan

The Texan team seems to have had no negative effect from losing last years Ballistic Bowl. With a solid double digit across his board and G Man battling injuries and Bye weeks, this one is a no brainer, even the Geico Caveman can predict this one. Outcome: Texan 156  G Man  97

McKinney vs Pardue

Hey you would think a matchup between a 3-0 team and a 2-1 team would be a prime candidate for the premier matchup, not. The McKinney team has played way over their abilities, and unless they pull a Balut magic act 2008, this team will fold like a cheap suitcase, and that starts now. On the other hand, there is no better team in the eSFL than the Bruisermakers at this time. Team management built a solid team via the draft and free agency and the only thing that could disrupt a championship in 2010 is massive injuries. Look for MFIC to roll to another victory and challenge all scoring records in the league.

 Outcome: Pardue 226  McKinney 128 

Boot Hill vs D

Boot Hill has a nice wide receiver corp and a very nice quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. That's it. On the other side is the defending Ballistic Bowl champs, the Crownholders, who have Clay Mathews.

With Boot Hill on a serious downward spiral after their 2008 Title, winning only 4 of their last 16 contest, this one belongs to the Crownholders. Outcome: D 127  Boot Hill 123

Frost vs Zima

Frost=yummy. Zima = yucky. Actually the Zima team is the best he has had since his title year back in 2004. The only thing his team is missing is a decent wide out. The Frost team is hampered by the bye in this one. Outcome: Zima 134  Frost 112
